Collection consists of the records of the United States Naval Training School that was located at Dartmouth College during World War II. Includes enrollment lists and statistics for students from the Navy and the Marines, student records, and material regarding the curricula for the V-12 unit. Includes inventories, bills, shipping orders, code lists, and lists of text books and other purchases for the training school. Includes material regarding the status of the Navy V-12 students at Dartmouth College and the organization of a Dartmouth Navy Alumni Association. Includes glass slides of British and American aircraft used in recognition training. Also includes a questionnaire, which was sent to staff officers, students, and students' wives, regarding housing, shopping, recreation, laundry services, and general services available to Navy personnel in Hanover, N.H. during the war.

Ernest Martin Hopkins, the eleventh president of Dartmouth College, was born in Dunbarton, N.H. in 1877. He received his AB from Dartmouth in 1901 and his AM from Dartmouth in 1908. From 1901 to 1905 he was secretary to the president of College, and from 1905 to 1910 he was secretary of the College. He served as president from 1916 to 1945. He died in 1964. Princeton University's Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program was started in 1946 amidst a wave of enthusiasm for the ROTC that followed World War II. It joined the Army ROTC unit on campus, which had operated since 1919, and was followed by the formation of an Air Force ROTC unit in 1951.
